German Woman Imprisoned for Attempting to Hire a Hitman
A German woman was sentenced to more than three years in prison at the Dresden district court for attempting to hire a hitman on the darkweb.
The 41-year-old defendant from Dresden was, according to a press release from the Dresden Public Prosecutor’s Office, charged with hiring a hitman on the darkweb to kill her husband’s 23-year-old girlfriend.
According to testimonies presented in the sentencing hearing, a journalist reached out to German law enforcement in Feburary 2021 and told investigators about the murder-for-hire plot. Investigations revealed that the defendant had given the hitman the 23-year-old’s name, address, and vehicle’s plate number. She asked the hitman to make the murder look like an accident. The defendant sent the hitman 0.2 Bitcoin as payment for the hit.
The bitcoin transaction led the investigators back to the defendant resulting in her arrest on February 26, 2021. The investigators also tried to track the bitcoin’s recipient resulting in the identification of a Romanian individual residing in the UK. The suspected hitman has, however, not been arrested. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges against her. On November 13, a judge sentenced her to three years and one month in prison.
