TheDrugLlama Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison

Melissa Scanlan, one of two defendants behind the Dream Market vendor account “TheDrugLlama,” was sentenced to 13 years in prison for distributing fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills and participating in an international money laundering scheme.

According to court documents, Scanlan opened “The Drug Llama” vendor account in October 2016 and operated it until August 2018 with help from Brandon Arias, her co-defendant. The duo used the account to distribute thousands of counterfeit oxycodone pills that contained fentanyl or acetyl fentanyl.

Every week Scanlan and Arias distributed 1,000 fentanyl and acetyl fentanyl pills sourced from a Mexican drug trafficking cartel. By the end of the drug trafficking operation in August 2018, the duo had distributed more than 52,000 fentanyl pills throughout the United States and had earned more than $100,000 in the process.

On November 1, 2019, Scanlan pleaded guilty to ten charges:

  • one count of conspiracy to distribute fentanyl;
  • five counts of distributing fentanyl;
  • one count of selling counterfeit drugs;
  • one count of misbranding drugs;
  • one count of conspiracy to commit international money laundering;
  • and one count of distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.

In her guilty plea, Scanlan admitted that she had participated in an international money laundering scheme with Mexican cartel members and that she had aided and abetted in the distribution of fentanyl pills resulting in at least one fatal overdose.

On February 2, 2020, Scanlan was sentenced to 160 months in federal prison in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois

Special Agent Charles L. Grinstead, in Charge of FDA Office of Criminal Investigations Kansas City Field Office:

Illicit opioid distribution, whether online or through conventional drug distribution methods, and the resulting overdoses and deaths are a continuing national crisis; those who contribute to that crisis through their illegal actions will be brought to justice. We are fully committed to disrupting and dismantling illegal prescription drug distribution networks that misuse the internet at the expense of public health and safety.

With accessibility of fentanyl, it is imperative that the Drug Enforcement Administration and its law enforcement partners exploit all distribution avenues utilized by drug traffickers in Scanlan’s case,” stated DEA Special Agent in Charge William J. Callahan of the St. Louis Division. “Scanlan distributed poison in our community that resulted in death and she is now being held accountable.

Scanlan’s co-defendant, Arias pleaded guilty to eight charges in July 2019 and was sentenced to 9 years in prison on November 12, 2019.

The land of the free my ass..

The American justice system is a deadly and terrible joke..
Everyone selling something is responsible for everything and even death of users but not the real guilty ones!!
The pharma industry, the alcohol industry, the tobacco industry and so on.. They are guilty for the death of millions and millions and nobody says or do something..

Purdue is responsible for the whole fucking opioid crisis and guess what? nobody gives a single fuck, but this woman is getting 13 years..

Damn, fent aint nothing. Why hate? I am for the legalization of all drugs. The drug taking and general public has right to access any drug and the info concerning proper usage. Any drug using person who is claiming persons who sell fent deserve extreme punishment are foolhardy.

Why do so many people hate fentanyl in general? Sure she was selling fake pills which I think does deserve the hate but plenty of people are prescribed fentanyl for legitimate uses. Seems like you guys think they are evil too

Because fentanyl is poison. The lethal dose is so small, it is by far the most dangerous lace. All lacing is dangerous and fucking stupid, but fent is evil. SOOOO many people have died from it. I’ve watched a cocaine OD from 1 line because it was laced with fent. My brother watched the same thing with his best friend, except in that case the kid died.

If all drugs were legal, well that would be problematic. But we need to have better access to pain management, otherwise the chinese and mexicans will continue to find efficient ways of sneaking it in. Today, the easiest way is hands down fent

Even if fent were legal this would still be fraud. Like if someone sold you a teddy bear laced with arsenic kind of fraud.

haha you think women deserve less punishment? nice white knight bullshit
fentanyl in and of itself is fine, it can be used responsibly if you KNOW you have fentanyl. disguising other drugs as fent is disgusting and she deserves to be locked up so long. people dont hate fentanyl people hate unknowingly taking it, which is understandable cause it is very dangerous to the user

Maybe if the markets that thought they were doing the right thing by banning fent would have let products be labeled as the product they were. people had known they were taking fent. I love how all the moral justice warriors come out and rise up against the big evil fentanyl, and it is poison!!!!! Then in the same breath, will offer you enough methamphetamine for 100 dollars to stay awake for 7 days. Or some 99% pure MDMA!!!! Which really is just some MDMA and some research chemicals. If the products are labeled as the product they are and you purchase them, nobody is at fault. If you don’t know that if you buy fentanyl, heroin,methamphetamine, etc and don’t know how to at least be safe using them, than maybe shouldn’t have been using then in the first place. I bought 20,000 xanax from someone for 82 cents a piece… I’m totally sure they are legit pharma made bars and have exactly 2 mg of alprazolam

It’s one thing selling fentanyl, but lacing oxy and selling them as plain Oxycodone is a cunt thing to do. It’s surprising that there has not been more deaths this incident.
